Questions And Answers?
How can we
know what we are
When we do
not know why we are here?
We do not understand what we do,
While we say
we do.
Like random
shafts of light
From a
life-giving sun
We are here,
and we act
Knowing not
how or why,
We are here,
To do what
we do.
We act on
our random thoughts
Shafts of
light flashing through our brains,
Finding
whatever whys we can
For the
things we do.
Wherefore
this celestial construction?
We stand our
ground
On this tiny
speck
In a
whirling mass of matter
In a
colossal emptiness.
Wherefore
this spark of life
Where once
was nothingness?
Does our
passage matter?
Does a
kindness matter
In a world
filled with horrors?
Will I/you
be remembered tomorrow
For an evil
deed,
For a thing
done, undone?
Do things
matter?
Do futures
matter?
We stumble,
struggle,
Turn
darkness into light,
Wonders
flowing
From our
hands and minds.
We are here.
We have
hopes.
We have
dreams.
We have a
future.
We are the
future!
We go on
with our lives, no matter where we are on the age spectrum, starting out or
looking back and contemplating our pasts. In our beginnings we have no
alternative to sallying forth. Others expect it of us, and most of us expect it
of ourselves. Some believe it’s just a scam and waste many productive years
before they buckle down. I never gave it a second thought, having a part-time
job all through high school, saving my money for the come what may. When I
became a father much too young I just kept on going ‘til I had a trade that
would pay the bills. Like most of us, I had no illusions about parental support
or a fairy godmother.
Most of us
had no time to speculate about our place in the universe, or the piece of rock
where humanity found itself. Some of us obviously found that question an
imperative to find an answer for.
Many of us
came to consider those questions, looking for answers only after we had figured
out how to put bread on the table. Most of us were too busy during that time,
building those relationships that would determine the shape of our lives, the
boss we worked for, the people we loved, those people and things that would
spur us to continue our efforts, whatever we were doing.
But many of
us did get to confront those questions at some time in our lives. Not that we
necessarily determine answers that would satisfy us. Many of us have not been
able to do that. Maybe the lucky ones are those that have found answers that
can satisfy them, answers that they can live with. Many of us will just have to
live with the unanswered questions.
If you are
among the fortunate ones that can live with the unanswered questions, and be
content in the belief that what you are doing is worthwhile doing, what you
have done and accomplished was worthwhile to have done, then life is great!
You probably
have people around you that you love and who love you. And if you don’t, you
can rightly love yourself.
The rest of
us can struggle on to try to get to that happy state.
What’s
happening at your house?
